River of Coins for Dementia Awareness

The School Council encourages us all to become a Dementia Friend.

20th March 2017 is Dementia Awareness Day at St Andrew's. The School Council wanted us to know more about this as we will probably all know someone who is affected.

We were visited by our friend Joanie who is from Greenmount. She looked after her Dad when he had Alzheimer's. She has set up a group for families of people with dementia and they have D-Caff where they meet every two weeks to support people.

Joanie did a whole school assembly and then various presentations in different classes. In the afternoon we put our coins onto the playground like a river and this money will go to help the Alzheimer's Society.

There are five key messages:

1. Dementia is not a part of ageing

2. Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain

3. Dementia is not just about losing your memory - it can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday tasks

4. It's possible to live well with dementia

5 There's more to a person than dementia
